Discount Rocketry offers model rockets from the ready-to-fly (a specialty) to Level Four model kits. While the site claims discounts averaging about 30%, a quick online check shows this claim isn’t always accurate. For example, at the time the Estes Solar Scouts Launch Set was $20.64, it was a nearly $9 savings over the $29.49 price on the Estes site. But the same product was $19.99 at Toys “R” Us, and $18.79 at eHobbies.com. Yet during the same period, the Quest Space Shuttle Intrepid kit at $11.89 was nearly four dollars or more cheaper than most other outlets, so it might pay to search around online to get the best price. Yet the site itself sells so many intriguing items and has such a great online newsletter, it’s like getting something for nothing.

Some of the cool items offered for sale include the Estes RTF Snitch Kit, a ready-to-fly flying saucer needing only a motor; it flips over at the top (apogee) of its flight and lands on wire legs, and costs only $9.09. Discount Rocketry also has parts and supplies for TARC, the Team America Rocketry Challenge. You'll find motor reloads, launch supplies and tools, as well as Quest and Estes rockets.

The site also offers free downloadable Winroc Model Rocket software that allows you to “check the stability of your model rocket and predict the altitude it will achieve,” with additional software showing how different motors will affect flight.

Discount Rocketry's purpose is to sell every product for sale by every rocketry manufacturer in the country at a discount. It may not have every product, but it certainly has many of them, though not all are sold at actual discount prices. Still, the selection is huge. If you don't feel like closely examining a bunch of model rocket stores individually, take a look at the products on this site — chances are, you'll find everything you want and more.

Some of the extra resources on the Discount rocketry site aren't obvious at first glance, but if you search around, you'll find free Winrock Model Rocket Software, similar to RockSim, except it also predicts the altitude of the flight and has additional software showing how different motors will affect the flight. Sign up for the "Modelrockets.us" free newsletter, which you can have sent to you when new content comes out.

While Discount Rocketry tells buyers that "shipments become the responsibility of the purchaser after leaving the Discount Rocketry warehouse," they do offer shipping insurance, which replaces any damaged items. There's a direct telephone number, and a site map where you can find sections that aren't visible on the homepage.

Summary:

Discount Rocketry doesn't always offer discounted merchandise, but it does do so often enough to justify price checking for an item you're thinking of buying. The site offers a free newsletter full of good information, and has products for all levels, including high power rockets.
